Reverse Life Forward features The Suns two previous singles, 'Immaterial Days' and 'A Mile In My Shoes' and sonically finds The Suns embracing an energised and highly post punk-influenced, stripped back, minimal sound. Three more singles 'Know The Know', 'Leap' and 'NeverNever' are also due in the near future following the album release.

Whilst the band has retained record label rights to themselves, Reverse Life Forward is the first album The Suns have released since signing a publishing deal with Nero Schwarz Music and BMG Rights Management UK for the band's entire songwriting catalogue during their last album campaign in 2020. “There's been lots of benefits since working on the last record with Nero Schwarz and having the weight of BMG behind our publishing catalogue” says Dave.

As the album title suggests, Reverse Life Forward draws on themes of past, present and future lives. Past lives lived, current lives living and future lives yet to exist. The figure on the cover of an everyman in front of infinite mirrors represents a blank canvas for infinite past, present and future selves.

For this album, the band consciously aimed for a pared-back approach to the recording and production and the majority of the songs were recorded with only two guitar parts, one for each of the band's two guitarists.

“We liked the idea of the tracks being more minimal and only having one Dave guitar part and one Lauren guitar part. We were pretty strict with it and it felt really good keeping it more sparse with the twin guitar approach.” says Markus of the recording process and overall sound of the album.

The songwriting seemed to flow without too much effort, with Dave commenting, “At times it was almost like the songs were writing themselves as situations presented. Ideas and thoughts just flowed and we somehow captured them out of the ether.”

One such song was 'Backwards Shadow' which was inspired by the double suicide of Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tom Evans. “I was talking to a friend about how you can't really hear Badfinger's records and not know about the double suicides. I actually said to them that it casts a backwards shadow over how you hear their music. I knew immediately that there was a song in there somewhere.” says Dave.

An interesting twist occurred during the recording of the next single, 'Know The Know' when guitarist Lauren was telling the guys about an 80's yacht rock track she'd heard called 'Lonely Runner' and how it had an instrumental section that reminded her of the music in Netflix show Stranger Things. Dave remembers “We jumped all over that idea as we had been looking for inspiration for the instrumental break and suddenly our production came to life with this 'Stranger Things' mid section, complete with sparkling 80's synths, Moog bass drones and Lauren's soaring guitar solo – it totally worked in context of the track.”

The album is book-ended by two instrumental tacks, the John Carpenter-esque 'Pre' and 'Post'. “We thought it would be cool to have intro and outro music on the album – a bit like having intro music before a show starts. We had a lot of fun bringing out the filmic qualities in 'Pre' and 'Post' with a nod to 70's horror movie favourite, Halloween.” smiles Markus
